They run annual events in Boston, and this year 30 brave Bostonians will enter the squared circle to compete in sanctioned amateur boxing matches after support and training from the charity. Funds raised go towards research into removing the blight that is cancer from our lives.

Research has shown significant differences in team building and activity preferences by age, with boomers even showing cynicism towards the value of teamwork exercises. However, younger staff believe that building those relationships at work is a significant factor to their enjoyment of work and staff retention at companies. Regardless of those differences, the data is clear that those with a close friend at work, not only value their job more, but are more motivated to achieve company goals, and be loyal to the business.
There’s no question that Boston is uniquely gifted when it comes to the availability of outdoor activities for your teams. However, not all staff members may be comfortable with adventurous activity and one must be extremely careful to consider not only their desires, but their physical capabilities when planning an event.
Remember, the whole point of team building is to facilitate growth and inclusion, so making sure the provider is able to accommodate all of your team, and enable them to fully participate in enjoying the activity is important.
Some professionals make the mistake of thinking that group events for their staff need to have either an explicit learning goal or be set up as a purely social event. Smart, modern team building companies have been able to innovate with products that achieve both objectives – to the point where people are booking them just for fun outside the corporate world.
With that said, you can’t underestimate the importance of a social, and organizing a well structured bonding event at a local venue, that is almost 90% fun and only contains a small element of organization to make sure teams get the opportunity to intermingle, can be very powerful.
There are circumstances, particularly with newer staff, staff on a development or ‘rising star’ type program, or even prior to recruitment, where a very structured, and assessment based approach handled by professional facilitators is essential. This gives you the opportunity to make the right decisions, offer the right support, and just as importantly, allows the team to get to know each other in a more relaxed, but still formal environment, away from their day to day work.
