Almost irregardless of the type of event you choose, research is clear that those with a friend at work, are significantly more loyal, hard-working and feel more of a purpose and connection to the goals of the company. All of that is easier to achieve if you have regular events that encourage bonding and mingling between teams. Having said that considering the make up of your teams, and the objectives you have for the event will help you narrow down your options.
There’s no doubt that teams based in Sacramento are luckier than many throughout the country, because we’re blessed with fantastic weather, and the outdoors often beckons as we stare into our computer monitors at work. For that reason alone, it’s often a good idea to consider outdoor events where possible, as it can have the greatest boosting effect on mood and is often the biggest diversion from the day-to-day grind of office work.
However, do bear in mind the capabilities, and confidence levels of your various team members. Some may not be able to participate fully in all ‘adventure based’ events, and while organizers do tend to cater well to different requirements, inclusion is always the preference, rather than simply accommodation.
Not every event needs to have a clear purpose and a learning goal. With the research we discussed earlier so clearly pointing to the strong benefits of developing inter-personal relationships in the office, just having fun and getting to know teammates can be a sufficient motivation alone for running an event.
However, if you have set certain objectives for an event, it’s important to reivew how successfully you stuck to the plan, and make sure everyone has a chance to review their performance in a structured manner. This can be especially important if you’re looking to assess the potential of new staff, monitor your ‘future leaders’ as they develop amongst their peers, and identify points of friction which may be holding you back at the office.
Some events, for example puzzle and challenge based, are more suited to a mix of fun and learning than others, so if you’re looking for a balanced event, those are often a good place to start. However, if you’re looking for all out fun, you can certainly achieve that in Sacramento, with some great options for food, drink, and even supporting charities while you’re feasting.
