Do employers really know what goes on at their workplace? Does anyone ever stop to think how many employees die while on the job each year? Do you know that some of your staff are probably dating their co-workers? Here are 10 surprising truths that you may not know about the world of work in the U.S. today.

1. We spend over 90,000 hours at work in our lifetime

It might not be the statistic you want to read while fed up at work, but on average an adult will work just under 100,000 hours in their working lifetime. That’s over 4,100 days, 820 working weeks, or 11 years.

2. Not many people love what they do

A staggering 73% of people said in a survey that they only work for the money, not for the love of the job. That’s a lot of unhappy people at work in America. In fact, out of the 100 million Americans who hold full-time jobs, 70% say they do not feel inspired by their work or their managers and admit to not feeling engaged or productive while on the job.

3. Nearly half of Americans fall asleep at work

How awake do your employees look today? Well 47% of people admit to having fallen asleep at work. While 51% wake themselves up, 10% end up getting caught by their bosses. However, an embarrassing 7% admitted their clients actually caught them sleeping on the job. For employers, 25% said they made mistakes due to sleep deprivation, while 47% feel less productive.

4. Find a job, get a date?

If you can’t love your job, then perhaps you can at least love someone at your job. A survey of office romances discovered that nearly half (47%) of all respondents have engaged in a workplace romance at some point during their careers. And while a lot of healthy relationships began at work, 31% of people said they experienced unwanted sexual advances in the workplace.

5. Almost 5,000 workers killed at work

A staggering 4,836 workers died on the job in the United States in 2015. This equates to 150 workers dying each day from hazardous working conditions. Furthermore, almost 3.7 million people reported work-related injuries and illnesses. But many injuries go under-reported. Therefore, it’s more likely to be nearer to 7.4 million to 11.1 million injuries a year.

6. 40% of employee turnover is due to work stress

Nearly half of workers who quit their jobs, do so due to stress. Many people feel that they just cannot carry on working as they are. Several of these employees have had already taken substantial time off work due to stress or health problems brought on by workplace stress.

7. 67% of workers plan on quitting their job within 12 months

Your employees may already be planning their resignation. Many employees expect to be doing something completely different within the next 12 months. As many as 67% of U.S. workers admit to wanting to be in a new job within a year.

8. 16% of new hires quit in their first week

At least 16% of new hires quit within their first seven days on the job. And not only that, 31% quit within the first six months. On average, businesses spend around $250,000 each year covering the costs of employee turnover.

9. Most workers suffer from a three-year job itch

Nine out of 10 millennials expect to change jobs every three years. This means most millennials will have something between 15 and 20 jobs during their lifetimes.

10. You Might Never Retire

Many Baby Boomers are of retirement age, but that doesn’t mean they will (or can) retire at 65. In fact, 49% of Baby Boomers plan to wait until after 65 to retire. And while some just want to keep busy, others don’t have a choice as they cannot afford to retire. Also, 10% of Boomers claim they will never retire and will keep working until they are physically unable.
