Running for more than a decade, the Lost Loon Triathalon raises money for the TRSA’s river conservation work in the state. Usually taking place in September, the event hosts a mailing list so interested participants at your company can register for notifications. Raising money for Habitat for Humanity, the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors, Inc event sees realtors battle it out with bankers and lawyers for glory on the golf course. A great day out, and one of the most popular events run by the GNAR all year.
Another event with a decade of success in the books, the Dierks Bentley Miles And Music For Kids motorcycle ride sold out virtually instantly this year. Get your name down quickly if you want to participate in the event. Most of the tickets are sold to riders, who plan to participate, with only a few tickets to the concert available for sale on the day. Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital was the beneficiary this year, and over the years over $3 million has beeen raised for children’s hospitals throughout the country.

Traditional team building events were more office focused and often had a planned ‘game’ or element to them. While these events are very good at assessing new starters, or ‘breaking the ice’ when a new team is formed, there has been a trend in recent years towards more informal events, and events that blend entertainment with team building in a more modern way, such as fully interactive escape rooms full of the fun technology and special effects that make them a draw for private events and parties as well as corporate activities.
Outdoor team building offers the opportunity for your team to escape the confines of the office, and explore their relationships, skills in a new environment. It also give the opportunity for the company to provide a genuinely unique and new experience to staff who’ve never tried an activity previously.
It’s important to take into account the individual capabilities of team members when planning an outdoor event, particularly if it involves strenuous athletic activity, even if just for a small part of the day. The main purpose of team building events is to foster a sense of inclusiveness and bonding, so full participation by all members of the team is ideal, and the day should ideally be planned accordingly.
One of the first decisions to make when planning your team event is whether it’s part of your company’s formal staff development and human resources plan, or something more informal to reward the team after completing a successful project, or simply to foster bonding. While some events are able to cater to both, it can be useful to split these up so that the rewarding, fun events, can be purely focussed on those goals.
When planning an event with more formal learning objectives in mind, it’s important to make sure there is some follow up and review as part of the return to work afterwards. Even if it means figuring out why the senior management team were the only ones not to make it out of the Escape Room Challenge!
There are team event companies who specialize in assisting you if you have extremely structured requirements for the program, for example fully assessing a new intake of staff, or as part of your recruitment process. This will usually include assistance with the review, ongoing assessment throughout the day, and a plan of action for ongoing implementation of the lessons covered. If this is beyond the scope of your current management’s experience, it can be useful to ensure that you select a provider who offers this level of support post-event.
